Your grief matters too.
When a brother or sister dies, people often ask how your parents are doing and forget to ask about you. Siblings are sometimes called the forgotten mourners. You are not forgotten here.
A bond like no other
Your brother or sister knew your secrets. They watched you grow up, shared things no one else shares, and were supposed to be with you for the rest of your life. Whether you were older, younger or a twin, that bond doesn’t end, and neither does the love.
Sibling grief is different from a parent’s or a grandparent’s. You may be grieving your sibling while also watching your parents fall apart, feeling like you have to be the strong one, or wondering where you fit in a family that has changed forever. All of that is real, and all of it belongs here.
What you might be carrying
Being overlooked
Cards, calls and casseroles go to your parents. It’s okay to say, “I’m hurting too.”
Being the strong one
Many siblings hold back their own tears to protect their parents. You deserve a place to let them fall.
A changed family
Holidays, birthdays and family photos look different now. Your place in the family may feel different too.
Come to a meeting
Adult siblings are always welcome at our meetings, alone or alongside your parents. Most of the people in our circle are parents, and they understand. You can share, or simply listen.
